How to use a shield in Minecraft: timing and blocks
How to use a shield in Minecraft: off-hand, hold right-click, wait a quarter second, face the hit. What it blocks, what it can't, and how axes stop it.
To use a shield in Minecraft, put it in your off-hand and hold the use button (right-click by default) in Java Edition, or sneak in Bedrock. It starts blocking a quarter of a second after it comes up, and only against hits from in front of you. Below are the exact rules for Java Edition 1.21.x: the recipe, what a shield blocks and what goes straight through it, how axes switch it off, and what an AI’s shield reflex taught about timing.
How to make a shield
A shield takes six planks and one iron ingot. Put the iron ingot in the top middle slot, planks to its left and right, a full row of planks in the middle, and one plank in the bottom middle. Any kind of planks works [1].
Some guides that rank for this question give a different layout. If the grid in your game doesn’t match, the recipe book shows the right one.
A new shield has 336 durability [1]. Trial chamber reward chests and vaults can also give you a damaged one [1].
How to use a shield in Minecraft, step by step
- Put it in your off-hand. Select the shield in your hotbar and press the swap key (F by default), or drag it into the off-hand slot in your inventory [2]. Your sword or pickaxe stays in your main hand.
- Raise it. Hold the use button in Java Edition; sneak in Bedrock Edition. You slow to a sneaking pace while it’s up [1].
- Raise it early. The shield blocks nothing for the first 5 game ticks, a quarter of a second [3]. Mojang’s bug tracker logs this delay as MC-100949 [1].
- Face the attack. It covers everything in a half-circle in front of you, measured sideways only. Looking up or down doesn’t change what it covers [1].
- Drop it to hit back. In Java, swinging while the shield is up doesn’t attack. In Bedrock you can attack, but it lowers the shield [1].
What a shield blocks
A raised shield blocks the hit completely: no damage, and the shield takes the wear instead [1]. The list of blockable attacks is long [@mcwiki-shield, sec. “Blockable attacks”]:
- Melee hits from every source. Status effects from the attacker don’t reach you.
- Arrows, including tipped, spectral and flaming ones. The effect or the fire doesn’t carry through, and a blocked arrow can bounce off into someone else.
- Thrown tridents, which is what drowned throw.
- Small projectiles: snowballs, eggs, llama spit, pufferfish spines and shulker bullets. In Java the shulker’s Levitation doesn’t carry through; in Bedrock it still does.
- Fireballs from blazes and fire charges, with no burning afterwards.
- Direct hits from a ghast’s fireball. The wiki adds a catch: “These still cause environmental damage” [1]. For a full ghast plan, see how to kill a ghast.
- Explosions. In Java a shield blocks all of them, creepers included, and wither skulls too.
Knockback while blocking
Blocking also stops the shove from melee hits and projectiles. Knockback from explosions, hoglins, zoglins and ravagers still gets through, only much weaker [1]. A ravager’s headbutt still pushes you back about 3 blocks [1]. On a ledge, “weaker” can still mean “over the edge”, as the case study below shows.
What blocking costs
A blocked attack of 3 damage or more takes that much durability from the shield, rounded up. Weaker hits cost nothing [1]. In Java, slimes, magma cubes and other mobs that hurt by touch drain a shield fast if you stand inside them (bug MC-169167) [1].
What a shield can’t block
These go through a raised shield [@mcwiki-shield, sec. “Unblockable attacks”]:
- arrows from a crossbow enchanted with Piercing;
- lightning, including from Channeling tridents;
- the effects of splash and lingering potions, evoker fangs and the ender dragon’s breath;
- the warden’s sonic boom;
- fall damage, including the damage from an ender pearl landing.
Shields also do nothing against drowning [3]. A guardian’s laser is only partly blocked: the shield stops the direct damage, not the magic damage [1].
The dragon’s breath is the one to remember in the End: hiding behind a shield in the purple cloud doesn’t help. The Ender Dragon guide has the rest of that fight.
How an axe disables a shield
An axe hit on a raised shield is a “crushing blow”. It switches off all of the target’s shields for 5 seconds. It does no damage itself, and it works whatever the axe’s attack cooldown [4, 3].
What that means for you:
- Axe mobs do it too. Vindicators, piglin brutes and any mob that picked up an axe, zombies included, disable a shield the same way. So does the warden’s melee hit [4, 1].
- The first quarter second is safe. A crushing blow only lands on a shield that is fully up, past its 5-tick delay [1].
- A short knockback immunity. In Java, a player whose shield was just stunned can’t be knocked back for a few ticks. It’s an open bug, MC-268147, so it may change [4].
Against a vindicator or brute, the shield buys you one blocked swing, then 5 seconds without it. Use them to back off or to hit.
Repairing and enchanting a shield
There are three ways to repair one [@mcwiki-shield, sec. “Repairing”]:
- Crafting grid: two damaged shields become one, with both durabilities added plus 5 %. The pattern is lost.
- Grindstone: the same sum, and it keeps the pattern of the shield in the top slot.
- Anvil: add planks or another shield. It keeps the pattern and the enchantments.
A shield takes three enchantments, all from an anvil: Unbreaking (up to III), Mending and Curse of Vanishing [1]. With Mending, the experience you pick up repairs it.
You can also put a banner’s pattern on a shield in the crafting grid. The banner is used up, the shield can’t already have a pattern, and it can’t be washed off in a cauldron afterwards [1].
Nixi’s angle: a shield reflex on a timer
Nixi is an AI VTuber whose bot plays Minecraft by itself (how that works). Her rig, the code that turns her decisions into moves, has a shield reflex. What follows comes from that code and from her death records, read on 24 October 2026.
How her reflex is timed. The quarter-second delay shapes it. Her rig’s notes measured that an arrow from ten blocks away takes about 0.3 seconds to arrive. That’s barely more than the delay, so raising the shield when the arrow appears is often too late. A drawing bow gives about 0.95 seconds of warning. So she raises the shield:
- at an arrow or fireball on course for her, due in 0.1 to 1.5 seconds;
- at an archer drawing on her while facing her, such as a skeleton or a crossbow piglin;
- at a ghast about to fire.
She raises the shield before she turns, because the 5 ticks start with the raise. She turns to face what’s coming because only the front counts, and keeps her shield in her off-hand all the time. Her rig’s notes say why: one arrow from an archer she hadn’t seen arrived before the shield did. Her rig does not raise it against the dragon’s fireball. The fireball itself barely hurts, and holding the shield kept her standing in the cloud where it landed (her review of 3 October 2026).
What the records show. Of the 144 death notes from her two survival runs, 35 show the shield reflex in the last bridge lines before the death, 127 raises in all. A shield is on the list of things she did, not the list of things that saved her, and two deaths show where it stops.
- 6 October 2026, 00:51, the Nether. A ghast fired while she was 33 blocks above a lava lake. Her shield came up twice, and her health only went from 20 to 18. Her post-mortem still puts the death on the fireball knocking her off the ledge into the lava. That fits the rule: a shield reduces explosion knockback but doesn’t stop it [1]. Her rig gained a switch (
NIXI_LEDGE_FIGHT) that steps her away from the edge first when a ghast charges near a drop, with the shield only when there’s no way off. More on drops in lava-edge lessons. - 5 October 2026, 09:32, a lake. Standing in shallow water, drowned took her from 20 health to 0, the last hits mostly tridents. Tridents are blockable [1], but her aware reflexes didn’t run while she was in water at all. The fix (a switch called
NIXI_WATER_SHELTER) lets the shield work in the shallows when her head is above the water, and raises it at every drowned winding up a throw.
The lesson for human players is the same: raise the shield before the hit, face it, and think about where the knockback will put you.
FAQ
How do you block with a shield in Minecraft?
Hold it in your off-hand and hold the use button (right-click) in Java, or sneak in Bedrock. It blocks hits from the front after a quarter of a second [1, 3].
What is the shield recipe?
Six planks and one iron ingot: iron top middle, planks either side of it, a row of planks across the middle and one plank bottom middle [1].
Can a shield block a creeper explosion?
Yes. In Java a raised shield blocks all explosions, creepers included, though the knockback still gets through in weakened form [@mcwiki-shield, sec. “Blockable attacks”; sec. “Defense”].
Why did my shield stop working?
Most likely an axe hit it. A crushing blow from a player or an axe-wielding mob disables all your shields for 5 seconds [4]. It also can’t be raised while your main hand holds a bow [2].
How much durability does a shield have?
- Each blocked attack of 3 damage or more costs its damage in durability, rounded up [1].
