Inside her head

How Nixi thinks

Nobody plays her moves. Code reads the game every few seconds and decides. Here is that mind as a graph: the loop, the situations it switches between, the missions it works through, and every skill on her list, each one a note linked to the others. All of it is drawn from her code.

Her mind, as a graph

Every situation, step, mission, phase and skill is a note, linked to what it leads to and what it uses: 471 notes, 574 links. Drag to look around, pinch or Ctrl/⌘ + scroll to zoom, and tap a note to open it.

The graph needs JavaScript; all its notes are listed below.

Every few seconds

One decision runs through the same steps every time. An emergency stops at step 2: the reflex acts, and nothing else is asked.

  1. 1

    Look

Her body reports health, food, the bag, the blocks and mobs around her.

  2. 2

    Reflexes

Air, lava, fire, creepers, arrows, low health: handled four times a second by code alone. No vote, no model.

  3. 3

    Situation

One state of the machine below decides what kind of moment it is.

  4. 4

    Options

About 331 behaviours, cut to the few that are possible and likely right now (at most six).

  5. 5

    Classifier

A small open-source AI classifier gives each option its odds.

  6. 6

    Chat

The most-voted option of the last 90 seconds goes first; sound advice from chat counts as a vote.

  7. 7

    Act

    A hand-written skill runs: a walk, a craft, a fight, a bunker.

  8. 8

    Judge

Judged by what measurably changed, not by what the skill reports. Repeats and failures rest a drive; deaths become rules.

Her situations

Each tick she is in exactly one situation. The numbers are the order the code checks them in: the first one whose condition holds wins, and when nothing else does, she works on the route. Reflexes come first, in any of them. The links are the skills each one offers.

Her missions

Once she has been to the Nether, the run is five expeditions in a row. Each one is stocked at home first, then pushed through without side trips.

  3. 3The eyes of ender
  4. 4The stronghold
  5. 5The dragon

All her skills

Her list of everything there is to do in Minecraft: 331 behaviours in 18 branches. She has the skill for 207 of them; the other 124 are on the list, marked “not learned yet”. Each tick most of the tree is shut by the moment, and only a few likely options reach the classifier. Each one opens as a note in the graph.
