Ghast
How to kill a ghast: deflect fireballs, build blast-proof
How to kill a ghast in Java 1.21: hit its fireball back for an instant kill, or shoot it twice. Plus which blocks survive the blast, and an AI's ghast deaths.
To kill a ghast, hit its fireball back at it: a deflected fireball that hits the ghast directly does 1,000 damage and kills it outright. If you’d rather not time a swing, shoot it with a bow. A ghast has only 10 health, so one or two fully drawn arrows do it. The bigger danger is rarely the damage itself; it’s the blast knocking you, or the block you stand on, into the lava below.
All game facts in this post are for Java Edition 1.21.x unless a line says Bedrock.
What a ghast is and what it does
Ghasts are big floating Nether mobs, a 4×4×4 hitbox with 10 health points (5 hearts) [1]. They spawn in the Nether wastes, soul sand valleys and basalt deltas, in any light, wherever there is a solid block under a free space 5 blocks wide and 4 high [1]. In Java they always spawn one at a time [1]. Their crying can be heard from up to 80 blocks away, which is often your first warning [1].
Once it has you in range, a ghast turns to face you and shoots a fireball every 3 seconds, strafing from side to side while it does [1]. It never flies in to close the distance; it fires from where it is [1].
How far away can a ghast see you?
In Java, a ghast picks you as a target within 64 blocks horizontally and only 4 blocks vertically, so it has to be close to your height. Once it’s attacking, it keeps going as long as you’re within a 64-block sphere and it can see you [1]. Bedrock is different: a 28-block sphere, growing to 64 once you hurt it [1].
It needs a clear line of sight to fire. Any solid block breaks that line, transparent ones such as glass included [1]. That one rule is the basis of most of the defence below.
How much damage does a ghast fireball do?
The impact alone does 4 health on Easy, 6 on Normal and 9 on Hard. The explosion adds more the closer you are to it [1]. The wiki’s two pages disagree slightly on the blast’s maximum: 17 on Normal on the Ghast page, 15 on the Fireball page [1, 2]. Either way, a point-blank hit on Normal can take most of a full health bar. The explosion also sets fire to the blocks around it [2].
Fireballs fly in a straight line, unaffected by gravity, with no range limit [2]. If you see one coming, a step to the side is often enough.
How to deflect a ghast fireball
Hit the fireball with a melee attack or another projectile and it flies back the way you’re looking [2]. A deflected fireball that hits a ghast directly does 1,000 damage [1], far beyond its 10 health.
How to make it work:
- Look at the ghast, not the fireball, as you swing. The fireball goes in the direction of your head, so your aim is where it ends up [2].
- Swing as it reaches you. Too early and you miss; too late and it explodes in your face.
- Any item works, even an empty hand. An arrow or a snowball into the fireball deflects it too [2].
Killing a ghast with its own fireball earns the advancement Return to Sender [3]. Since Java 1.21.6, it’s also the only way to get the music disc “Tears” [1]; on 1.21.4 that disc doesn’t exist yet [1].
Other ways to kill a ghast
Shoot it with a bow
A bow at full draw (one second or more) does 6 to 11 damage per arrow, around 9 on average [5]. Against 10 health that’s one arrow if you’re lucky and two most of the time. Lead the ghast a little, since it strafes while it fires.
Ghasts take no damage from fire or lava [1], so Flame arrows add nothing. A ghast that drifts into lava does get slowed, which makes it an easy target for a while [1].
Let its own blast do it
A fireball’s explosion only reaches entities whose feet are within 2 blocks of it, so a ghast is only hurt by its own blast when the fireball goes off underneath it or inside its hitbox [2]. Don’t count on it.
Staying alive: shields, blocks and armour
Does a shield block ghast fireballs?
Yes. A raised shield blocks the direct hit from a ghast fireball, though the explosion still damages the blocks around you [6]. In Java it blocks explosions too [6], and it cuts the knockback from them sharply [6]. Two catches: it only covers the direction you’re facing, and it takes 5 game ticks (a quarter of a second) after you raise it before it blocks anything [6]. Raise it early and face the ghast. The full rules are in how to use a shield.
What blocks can ghasts not break?
Blocks with a blast resistance of 3.5 or more survive a ghast fireball hitting them from the side or the top; it takes 4.034 to absorb the whole blast [2]. Compare the blocks you’re likely to have:
- Netherrack: 0.4 [7]. The Nether’s own floor goes in one hit.
- Dirt: 0.5 [8]. A dirt bridge is no protection at all.
- Cobblestone: 6 [9]. Survives every ghast fireball.
So bring cobblestone (or any block at least as strong) for bridges, walls and roofs in the Nether. A one-block wall between you and the ghast also breaks its line of sight, and it stops shooting [1].
Armour and potions
Blast Protection cuts explosion damage by 8 % per level and, in Java, explosion knockback by 15 % per level, stacking across armour pieces [10]. The knockback part matters as much as the damage over a lava sea.
Fire Resistance does not stop the fireball’s hit or blast, because neither counts as fire damage. It does protect you from the fire the fireball leaves behind [11].
Ghast drops: tears and gunpowder
A ghast drops 0 to 2 gunpowder and 0 to 1 ghast tear, more with Looting, plus 5 experience [1]. Ghasts are the only source of tears [1].
The catch: a ghast over a lava sea drops its loot into the lava, and any item that falls into lava is destroyed, except netherite items [13]. If you want the tear, kill it over solid ground.
What tears are for:
- Potions of Regeneration, brewed from a tear [14].
- End crystals, which also need a tear [14]. Crystals are one way to re-summon the dragon or hurt it on its perch (how to beat the Ender Dragon).
- Dried ghasts, since Java 1.21.6: eight tears around a block of soul sand [15]. Not in 1.21.4.
Nixi’s angle: eight ghast deaths, half of them falls
Nixi is an openly AI VTuber whose bot plays Minecraft Java 1.21.4 on its own; how an AI plays Minecraft explains the setup. Everything in this section comes from her death records for 1 to 9 October 2026, which cover the end of run 1 and run 2.
What killed her. Eight deaths in those records name a ghast:
- Four were fireballs that knocked her off a ledge into lava: on 1 October at 23:46 (a 41-block drop), 2 October at 11:36 (45 blocks), and 6 October at 00:51 (33 blocks) and 03:03 (51 blocks). Each time she was walking somewhere: home to the portal, to the blaze spawner, looking for a biome.
- Two were fireballs that killed her outright, both on 5 October (00:12 and 23:34). At 00:12 she had been down to a few hearts with nothing to eat for half an hour; the ghast only finished what hunger and a late turn for home had started.
- One was the fire a ghast set: on 2 October at 10:27 she stood in it to eat and burned. Her log counts 37 fire hits.
- One, on 9 October at 21:10, the game recorded as “doomed to fall by a ghast”.
Half of these deaths weren’t really damage at all. They were the knockback over a lava sea, which is the warning in the tip above.
The 10:06 death. On 4 October at 10:06 she fell 46 blocks, from Y=71 to Y=26, into lava while tunnelling towards the blaze spawner, standing on dirt one moment and in the air the next. Her rig’s “ghast cover” reflex had fired three times in the lines just before. Her post-mortem still files it as “stepped off a drop”, and her records don’t say what took the dirt away, so we don’t claim the ghast did. Dirt’s blast resistance of 0.5 [8] would explain it, but the records don’t show it.
The fix. Her post-mortems for the knock-offs ended with the same rule: “shield up when a ghast is about”, and no open ledges over lava while one is near. Her code now does two things. It only reacts to a ghast that is charging a shot or facing her: in her lab, taking cover from every ghast in view sent her into cover nine times in two minutes and stopped everything else. And instead of running for cover, she can dig two blocks down where she stands. A ghast at its own height twenty blocks out can’t see into a two-deep hole past its rim. She only digs into solid ground, never on the face of a drop, and never next to lava or water.
It’s the same lesson the wiki gives in its own words: break the line of sight, and stay off thin ground. The Nether fortress guide and the blaze rod guide cover the trips where ghasts got her.
FAQ
How much health does a ghast have?
10 health points, or 5 hearts [1]. One or two fully drawn bow shots kill it [5], and one deflected fireball always does [1].
How do you hit a ghast fireball back?
Look at the ghast and hit the fireball with any item, your hand, an arrow or a snowball as it comes close. It flies off in the direction you’re looking [2].
Does a shield block ghast fireballs?
Yes, if you face the ghast and raise it at least a quarter of a second before the hit. The blast still damages the blocks around you [6].
What blocks can ghasts not break?
Anything with a blast resistance of 3.5 or more survives a hit from the side or top, so cobblestone (6) holds while netherrack (0.4) and dirt (0.5) don’t [2, 9, 7, 8].
Why can’t I get the ghast tear?
The ghast probably died over lava. Dropped items burn in lava [13]. Lure it over land, or wait until it drifts there, before the killing shot.
