How to get gold fast in Minecraft (Java 1.21)

How to get gold fast in Minecraft: Nether gold ore with any pickaxe, badlands gold up high, ruined portals, bastions and zombified piglins, with numbers.

The fastest way to get gold in Minecraft is to mine Nether gold ore: it’s common, any pickaxe works, and each block drops 2–6 gold nuggets [1]. In the Overworld, go to a badlands biome, where extra gold ore sits high in the hills instead of deep underground [2]. This guide ranks every quick source for Java 1.21, with the numbers behind each one and the catches.

The fast sources at a glance

Source Tool you need What you get The catch
Nether gold ore Any pickaxe 2–6 nuggets per block Mining it angers piglins
Badlands gold ore Iron pickaxe 1 raw gold per block You have to find a badlands biome
Ordinary gold ore Iron pickaxe 1 raw gold per block Deep, and rare in exposed walls
Ruined portals Iron pickaxe for the blocks Blocks of gold and a chest One portal per large area
Bastions Iron pickaxe for the blocks Gold blocks, gilded blackstone, chests Piglins and brutes
Zombified piglins A weapon Nuggets, sometimes an ingot Hit one and the crowd turns on you

Sources for the rows are in the sections below. Nine nuggets craft one ingot, and a block of gold crafts back into nine ingots [3].

How to get gold fast in the Nether

Nether gold ore

Nether gold ore looks like netherrack with yellow flecks. It’s the quickest gold in the game for three reasons:

  • Any pickaxe mines it, even wood [1]. You don’t need iron first.
  • It’s everywhere in the Nether. The game tries to place it 10 times per chunk, in every Nether biome, from Y 10 to 117 [1].
  • It drops nuggets directly, 2–6 per block in Java [1]. Bedrock used to drop 2–5 and was raised to 2–6 in Bedrock 1.20.60 [1].

Our arithmetic: if each of 2 to 6 is equally likely, that’s 4 nuggets a block on average, so about 2.25 blocks per ingot. A pair of golden boots costs 4 ingots [4], which is 36 nuggets, or around nine blocks of ore.

Fortune or Silk Touch? Fortune multiplies ore drops; Fortune III averages 2.2 times the normal drop [5]. For Nether gold ore the wiki puts the Fortune III average at 8.8 nuggets, still less than an ingot. So mining it with Silk Touch and smelting the block, which gives one whole ingot, is slightly better [1].

Bastions

A bastion remnant is a Nether ruin built with blocks of gold set into its walls. The wiki’s looting tutorial says you need at least an iron pickaxe to mine the gold blocks, names the bridge type as the best bastion if you just want gold, and counts 12 gold blocks in the housing type, not counting the randomly placed ones [6]. It also advises building up 3 blocks before you mine the bridge’s gold, so the bastion’s mobs can’t reach you [6].

Bastions also contain gilded blackstone, blackstone with gold in it [7]. Any pickaxe mines it, but it only drops gold 10 % of the time (2–5 nuggets); otherwise you get the block back. Fortune raises the chance, not the amount: 1 in 7 with Fortune I, 25 % with Fortune II, and Fortune III guarantees the nuggets [7].

Piglin brutes guard bastions, and gold armour doesn’t calm them. How to find a bastion and what each type holds is in our bastion guide; how to deal with the guards is in how to fight a piglin brute.

Zombified piglins

Zombified piglins are the neutral, green-skinned mobs that roam the Nether wastes, crimson forests and fortresses [8]. Each one drops 0–1 gold nugget when killed, and a gold ingot 2.5 % of the time if a player or tamed wolf kills it; each Looting level adds 1 % to the ingot chance [8].

The catch is the group. In Java, hitting one angers every zombified piglin in a wide area around it, unless your first hit kills it [8]. Gold farms turn that into an advantage: the simplest design is a trench in the Nether wastes that you lure angry zombified piglins into and fight from safety, though the wiki calls it slow [9]. Big farms use spawning platforms or many Nether portals, because portal blocks in the Overworld can spawn zombified piglins too [9]. A farm is the fast way to a lot of gold, but not to your first ingots.

How to get gold fast in the Overworld

Badlands: the best place

Badlands (the striped terracotta hills, formerly called mesa [10]) have an extra batch of gold ore. It tries to generate 50 times per chunk, anywhere from Y 32 to 256, and unlike ordinary gold it isn’t cut back where it touches air [2]. So in badlands you can find gold in cliffs and cave walls far above the usual depth. Mineshafts there also generate much higher, often in the open [10].

One exception: if a cave biome such as dripstone caves sits under the badlands, that cave area gets none of the extra gold [10].

Best Y level for gold outside badlands

Everywhere else, gold ore comes in two batches [@mcwiki-gold-ore, sec. “Natural generation”]:

  • 4 tries per chunk from Y −64 to 32, most common around Y −16 and thinning out towards both ends;
  • an extra try in half of all chunks, spread evenly from Y −64 to −48.

Half of the ore in both batches doesn’t generate where it would be exposed to air, so gold is rarer in cave walls than you’d expect [2]. Branch mining at around Y −16 beats wandering caves for it. Where it replaces deepslate, or tuff below Y 0, it becomes deepslate gold ore, which works the same way [2].

Overworld gold ore needs an iron pickaxe or better; with stone or wood it drops nothing [2]. Each block drops one raw gold, and Fortune I, II and III raise that to 1–2, 1–3 and 1–4 [2]. Smelt raw gold into ingots, or craft nine into a block of raw gold to carry them [11].

Ruined portals

Ruined portals are broken obsidian frames that generate in almost every biome of both the Overworld and the Nether (not the deep dark) [12]. Each has a chest with gold items and portal supplies such as obsidian and flint and steel; in Java, terrain sometimes replaces the chest, often with lava [12]. Many variants also have blocks of gold built in. The wiki’s variant list ranges from none on the small incomplete portals to 6 on the large incomplete one [12]. Six blocks are 54 ingots.

They’re spread thinly: one per square 400 blocks wide, with 240-block gaps between the squares [12]. Grab one if you see it; don’t plan your gold on it.

Chests and old gear

Gold ingots turn up in many structure chests, including mineshafts, villages, desert and jungle pyramids, shipwrecks, buried treasure and Nether fortresses [3]. You can also smelt golden tools and armour, which gives one nugget each [13], a small way to recycle the golden swords zombified piglins drop.

Which method should you use?

  • Early game, no iron yet: Nether gold ore with any pickaxe. Mine out of piglins’ sight.
  • You have iron and live near badlands: surface-level badlands gold, no deep digging.
  • You need a lot: a zombified piglin farm, or a bastion’s gold blocks if you can handle the brutes.
  • Just enough for golden armour to calm piglins: one boot pair, 4 ingots, from Nether gold ore near your portal.

Nixi’s angle: all her gold came from the Nether

Nixi is an openly AI VTuber whose bot plays Minecraft Java 1.21.4 on its own, live on Twitch. Gold mattered to her for one reason: golden armour keeps piglins calm, and going without it cost her.

In her death records, 144 deaths from 1 to 9 October 2026, ten carry the root cause “no gold on in the Nether”. The first was on 1 October at 10:38 and the last on 5 October at 06:04. Her planner’s fix was to put gold boots on before every portal.

Her play logs (27 September to 9 October 2026) show where the gold for those boots came from:

  • Nether gold ore only. Her mining tasks for gold targeted nether_gold_ore every time; there is no task for Overworld gold ore in the logs.
  • Three good trips, four duds, all on 28 September. Three tasks brought back 38, 36 and 18 nuggets. Four earlier tries the same day each dug one block and timed out with nothing gained.
  • Raw gold she never used. Her inventory snapshots show raw gold, up to five pieces, from 27 September to 6 October, picked up while digging. The one smelting try for gold ingots, on 4 October, smelted nothing.
  • Boots crafted 5 times, on 28 September (twice), 2, 5 and 9 October. Five other tries failed for missing ingredients and one produced nothing. (Dates are those of the play logs.)

The lesson matches the guide: Nether gold ore is the quick source, since it needs no iron. Her failed crafts show the other half: gold you carry gets spent, so mine a spare boot pair’s worth while you’re at the ore. Since 18 October her stream has been on an adventure map, Rescue Mission (run card, 29 October), so there’s no new survival data yet. How the bot plans tasks like these is in how Nixi’s bot works.

FAQ

What is the best Y level for gold in Minecraft?

Around Y −16 outside badlands, where the main batch is most common [2]. In badlands, extra gold generates anywhere from Y 32 to 256, so look in the hills and cliffs.

Can you mine gold with a stone pickaxe?

Not Overworld gold ore: it needs iron or better and drops nothing otherwise [2]. Nether gold ore and gilded blackstone work with any pickaxe [1, 7].

Is Fortune worth it on gold?

On Overworld gold ore, yes: Fortune III averages 2.2 times the raw gold [5]. On Nether gold ore, Silk Touch and smelting is slightly better than Fortune III’s 8.8 nuggets [1].

Do zombified piglins always drop gold?

No. Nuggets drop 0–1 at a time, and an ingot only 2.5 % of the time, and only for a player or tamed wolf kill [8].

Why do piglins attack me when I mine gold?

Breaking gold ore angers them even if you wear gold or are invisible [2]. Mine gold away from piglins, then come back.
