Piglins
How to fight a piglin brute in Minecraft (Java 1.21)
How to fight a piglin brute: gold won't calm it and its axe breaks your shield, so fight it from above or from range. The numbers, plus vindicators.
To fight a piglin brute, don’t trade blows with it on flat ground: get above it or out of its reach and hit it from there, with arrows, lava or strikes from a pillar. A brute has 50 health, hits for 13 on Normal, ignores gold armour and switches your shield off with its axe [1, 2]. Below are the rules for Java Edition 1.21.x, how to fight one, the same lesson for vindicators, and how an AI’s fight code learned to treat brutes differently from piglins.
All game facts in this post are for Java Edition 1.21.x unless a line says otherwise. Nixi’s run is on 1.21.4.
What a piglin brute is
A piglin brute is the hostile, stronger cousin of the piglin. It carries a golden axe, sometimes enchanted, and never spawns with armour [1]. The numbers that matter:
| Piglin brute | |
|---|---|
| Health | 50 (25 hearts) |
| Axe damage, Java | 7.5 Easy, 13 Normal, 19.5 Hard |
| Axe damage, Bedrock | 6 Easy, 10 Normal, 15 Hard |
| Attacks players within | 12 blocks |
| Drops | 20 XP; a golden axe 8.5 % of the time (Java) |
All from the Piglin Brute page [1]. For scale: you have 20 health, so a brute has two and a half times as much, and one Normal hit with no armour takes 13 of your 20.
Brutes only appear in bastion remnants, and only when the bastion generates. They never respawn once killed and have no baby form [1, 3]. Most piglin spots in a bastion roll a 10 % chance of a brute; some spots that only hold melee fighters roll a brute 5 times in 6 [3]. When a brute isn’t fighting, it walks back to the spot where it spawned [1], so brutes stay near their posts.
Why gold armour doesn’t save you
Ordinary adult piglins leave you alone if you wear at least one piece of golden armour [4, 5]. Brutes don’t care. They attack you on sight whatever you wear, can’t be distracted with gold items, don’t barter, and don’t run from soul fire or zombified piglins the way piglins do [1].
So keep the gold boots on in a bastion, because they keep the ordinary piglins out of the fight [4]. Just don’t expect them to help with a brute.
Why your shield fails against a brute
An axe hit on a raised shield is a crushing blow. The shield blocks that one hit, then every shield you carry is disabled for 5 seconds [2, 6]. Axe-wielding mobs do this too, and the Shield page names piglin brutes and vindicators [2].
Few mobs hit harder than a brute [1], so blocking one blow is worth it. But you then have five seconds with no shield, and the next blow lands. Two details from the Axe page [@mcwiki-axe]:
- a crushing blow can’t trigger while your shield is still in its 250 ms raise delay;
- it triggers however charged the axe swing is.
The full rules for blocking are in how to use a shield.
How to fight a piglin brute
The wiki’s combat tutorial sums it up: a brute is a melee fighter, and melee fighters are helpless when attacked from high above [7]. Every safe method uses that.
1. Pillar up and strike or shoot down
On open ground, build a pillar a few blocks high before the brute reaches you, then attack from the top [7]. Start building early: a brute’s knockback can throw you off a half-built pillar (see Nixi’s lab numbers below).
2. Shoot it before you go in
If brutes are already angry at you outside the bastion, the tutorial suggests killing them with a ranged weapon before you enter [7]. A bow works from where its axe can’t reach you.
3. Use lava
Brutes aren’t immune to fire or lava [1]. A lava bucket poured over one is very effective, though slow. It has a side benefit: killing a brute with lava doesn’t anger the nearby piglins [7]. Brutes can’t swim either; in water they sink and drown [1].
4. Never fight it in a corridor
The tutorial warns that a brute that corners you in a tight corridor will very likely kill you, even in strong gear. Carry blocks in your hotbar to wall corridors off [7]. A wooden or copper door won’t hold it back, because brutes open those [1].
5. If you must melee it, gear up
For players who aren’t confident, the tutorial recommends enchanted diamond or netherite armour with Protection IV, a Sharpness V sword and a few totems of undying. Killing a brute in two melee hits takes a maxed axe and Strength II [7].
Smaller tricks
- A piglin head on your head halves a brute’s detection range to 8 blocks in Java [1].
- Pull it out of the Nether. A brute in the Overworld or the End turns into a zombified piglin after 15 seconds, and keeps its axe [1].
- Let wither skeletons distract it. Brutes attack wither skeletons too, though they prefer players [1].
Vindicators: the same axe problem
Vindicators are the Overworld version of this fight. They carry an iron axe and hit for the same 7.5 / 13 / 19.5 as a brute, but have 24 health, not 50 [8]. They spawn in groups of 1–3 in woodland mansion rooms, sometimes with an evoker, and in raids; they sprint at you [8].
Their axe disables your shield for 5 seconds as well, even when the vindicator is riding a ravager [8]. The combat tutorial still calls a blocked hit worthwhile, given how much they deal [7]. Its other advice: light the dark mansion rooms (or use Night Vision), listen for their idle sounds, and kill vindicators before pillagers in a raid [7]. A vindicator named “Johnny” with a name tag attacks most other mobs instead of only you [8].
Nixi’s angle: gold fixed the piglins, not the brutes
Nixi is an AI VTuber whose bot plays Minecraft Java 1.21.4 on its own, live on Twitch. Her death records cover 144 deaths from 1 to 9 October 2026 (the end of run 1 and all of run 2). None of them is a brute or a vindicator, and her play logs never mention a brute or a bastion: her Nether trips went to fortresses and warped forests.
Piglins were another matter. Five of those deaths say “slain by Piglin” and two more say she swam into lava to escape piglins. Her post-mortems list “no gold on in the Nether” as a root cause of 10 deaths, the first on 1 October at 10:38 and the last on 5 October at 06:04. The fix in her planner: craft gold boots from nether gold ore as soon as her bag allows it, and wear them at once.
Gold boots do nothing against a brute, though, so her fight code (rig/duel.mjs) handles brutes on their own. Its notes record a lab of five fights per mob type, in her live kit (iron sword, bow, 36 arrows, shield, iron leggings, leather boots):
- Her old melee routine lost every brute fight. It stood and swung.
- The new routine counts brutes, hoglins and vindicators as “strong” mobs. She doesn’t trade blows with them: she builds a pillar and strikes down from it with her shield up between swings. In that lab it won all 40 fights, the brute “for nothing or next to it”.
- Two blocks of pillar weren’t enough. At the top of its jump, a brute’s arms reach as high as its head, and on a two-block pillar its axe reached her twice. The code now builds three for anything brute-sized.
- Starting at five blocks was too late. A brute’s axe knocked her off a half-built pillar, and a brute that turned up two blocks away killed her in two of three tries. She now starts the pillar when a brute is ten blocks off.
Those are lab numbers from her code’s notes, not live results; the live run hasn’t met a brute yet. For the edges that made piglin knockback deadly, see surviving the Nether’s lava edges. For how her fights work in general, see AI playing Minecraft on its own.
FAQ
Does gold armor work on piglin brutes?
No. Brutes attack players on sight whether or not they wear gold, and gold items don’t distract them [1]. Wear the gold anyway, for the ordinary piglins around them [4].
How much damage does a piglin brute do?
In Java, 7.5 on Easy, 13 on Normal and 19.5 on Hard with its golden axe; in Bedrock, 6, 10 and 15 [1].
Do piglin brutes respawn?
No. They only spawn when a bastion remnant generates, and once killed they’re gone [1, 3].
Can a shield block a piglin brute?
It blocks one hit. The axe then disables all your shields for 5 seconds [2].
What is the best way to kill a piglin brute?
From above or from range: pillar up and strike down, shoot it with a bow, or pour lava on it, which also leaves the other piglins calm [7].
