Stronghold
How to find a stronghold with eyes of ender (Java 1.21)
How to find a stronghold: throw an eye of ender twice from far apart, cross the two lines, dig at the right spot. Rings, odds, and an AI's real trip.
To find a stronghold, throw an eye of ender and walk the way it flies; throw again from a spot a few hundred blocks to the side, and the stronghold sits where the two lines cross. When an eye flies down instead of up, you’re standing over it, so dig. Below is how the eyes work, where strongholds can be, how many eyes to bring, and what happened when an AI did the whole trip on its own.
All game facts in this post are for Java Edition 1.21.x unless a line says Bedrock.
How an eye of ender points to a stronghold
An eye of ender is crafted from one ender pearl and one blaze powder [1]. Throw it (use, right-click by default) in the Overworld and it flies about 12 blocks towards the nearest stronghold, through any blocks in the way, leaving purple particles [1].
What it reads:
- Up means “keep going”. While you’re more than 12 blocks from the target, the eye rises so you can see its direction [1].
- Down means “you’re here”. Within 12 blocks of the target, it flies downward: the stronghold is under you [1].
- It may not come back. After two or three seconds the eye either drops (pick it up again) or shatters. The chance of shattering is 20% per throw [1]. An eye survives three throws in a row with a chance of 0.8³ = 51.2%, so after three throws it’s about a coin flip whether you still have it.
- Overworld only. In the Nether and the End a thrown eye does nothing [1].
The eye doesn’t aim at the portal room. It aims at the north-west corner (chunk coordinates 0, 0) of the chunk holding the stronghold’s starting staircase. The centre of that staircase is always at chunk coordinates 4, 4 [1], so dig about 4 blocks along +X and 4 along +Z from where the eye dives. This changed in Java 1.19 (22w11a); before that, eyes led to the chunk’s centre [1], which is why older guides tell you to dig somewhere else.
Triangulate: two throws instead of twenty
Following the eye one throw at a time works, but every throw risks the eye. A better way uses geometry:
- Throw once and note your coordinates and the direction the eye flew.
- Walk sideways a few hundred blocks, roughly at right angles to that direction.
- Throw again and note the second line.
- Where the two lines cross is the stronghold. The further apart your two throws, the more precise the cross.
- Walk there and throw once more to confirm. If the eye goes down, dig at the +4, +4 spot.
That’s three throws in total, so on average you lose 3 × 0.2 = 0.6 eyes on the search instead of several.
How far is the stronghold from spawn?
In Java Edition, strongholds sit in eight rings around the world’s centre (X=0, Z=0), 128 strongholds in total [2]. The first ring has 3 strongholds between 1,280 and 2,816 blocks from the centre, spread at roughly equal angles; the second ring holds 6 between 4,352 and 5,888 blocks [2].
So in a normal world, the nearest stronghold is at least 1,280 blocks from the centre. That’s why throwing an eye at spawn and walking is slow.
Go through the Nether
Horizontal distances in the Nether are scaled 8:1: one block there is eight in the Overworld [3]. The first ring’s 1,280–2,816 blocks become 160–352 blocks in the Nether (divide by 8). Once triangulation gives you the Overworld coordinates, divide X and Z by 8, travel there in the Nether, and build a portal back. It’s an eighth of the walk.
Bedrock is different
On Bedrock, strongholds are scattered at random, at least 160 blocks from the world’s centre, and there’s no limit on how many generate [2].
How many eyes of ender do you need?
A portal needs 12 eyes, one in each End portal frame [1]. Each frame has a 10% chance to generate with an eye already in it, which averages 1.2 pre-filled frames per portal [2]. About 28% of portals have none pre-filled [1].
Count it out:
- Frames: 12 to be safe, 10.8 on average.
- Search throws: about 0.2 eyes lost per throw. Three throws for a triangulation cost 0.6 eyes on average; ten throws of follow-the-eye cost 2.
- A margin: if you’re short at the portal, the nearest pearls may be hours away.
Twelve eyes is enough only if you triangulate carefully and get a pre-filled frame. Carrying 14 to 16 leaves room for bad luck.
Inside the stronghold: getting to the portal
Every stronghold starts with a spiral staircase leading to a five-way crossing, and the rooms branch from there, up to 50 rooms deep and within 112 blocks horizontally [2]. The portal room is the one room guaranteed to exist, and it never generates within five rooms of the starting staircase [2]. Plan on searching.
What to watch for:
- Silverfish. About 5% of the stronghold’s stone bricks are infested [2], and a silverfish spawner sits in the portal room [2]. Hit a silverfish without killing it and it calls others within a 21 × 11 × 21 area out of their blocks [4]. Kill each in one hit, or block the spawner off first.
- Lava in the portal room. The room’s blocks include 15 lava [2]. Watch your footing while you go round the frames; the case study below shows why.
- Mark your way. The corridors branch and loop; torches on one wall are the easiest way back.
Using /locate
If your world allows commands, Java can tell you: /locate structure minecraft:stronghold (the structure’s ID is stronghold) [5, 6]. For ring structures like strongholds there’s no maximum search distance, but results are only roughly ordered by distance, so the one it names isn’t guaranteed to be the closest [6]. Guides that say /locate stronghold describe an older form of the command; since Java 1.19 (22w19a) /locate also finds biomes [6], and the current syntax needs the word structure.
Nixi’s angle: run 1’s stronghold trip, from her logs
Nixi is an AI that plays Minecraft by itself, live on Twitch. Her run 1 (started 2026-09-27) reached the stronghold at a run clock of 126:02:18 and the End at 133:12:40. The run clock is wall-clock time since the run’s first join, restarts included. Her play logs show what filled those seven hours.
The eyes. On 2026-10-02 she crafted 12 eyes from her 12 pearls between 21:19 and 21:21, at home near the world’s centre.
The bearing. She threw the first eye at 21:21:03, and it shattered. The second throw came at 21:26:12, from about 190 blocks away, and that eye survived. Two throws gave her a line and a cross. Then she walked.
The find. At 22:13:58 her logs record the portal room found 48 blocks away, at about X −832, Z 1300. That’s roughly 1,540 blocks from the world’s centre, inside the first ring the wiki describes. The stronghold advancement followed at 22:18:33.
The way back. It took about seven hours. She was killed by a zombie at 02:35 and shot by a skeleton at 04:01 on the way. At 05:28:56 on 10-03 she lit the portal: 12 frames, 11 eyes placed, so one frame had come pre-filled. She had exactly one eye to spare.
Two honest caveats:
- She sees more than you do. Her bot reads every block in the chunks the game has loaded, which is how it spotted the portal room from 48 blocks away through rock. That’s a disclosed run rule, and a human can’t do it.
- Seven hours is not fast. The lava death cost more time than the search itself. Her notes from 2026-10-09 plan two throws about 200 blocks apart, then a walk to the cross, and a re-throw only when the fix looks more than 100 blocks off. Run 2 ended on 2026-10-09 before it got that far: 11 of 16 phases, no eyes crafted.
Before the stronghold comes the Nether: finding a fortress, getting blaze rods and getting ender pearls fast.
FAQ
Why does my eye of ender go up and then disappear?
Rising is normal: it means the stronghold is more than 12 blocks away. Each throw also has a 20% chance to shatter the eye [1]. Stand still and watch where it drops so you can pick it up.
How far is the closest stronghold in Java?
At least 1,280 blocks from the world’s centre, and at most 2,816 for the first ring’s three strongholds [2]. On Bedrock it can be as close as 160 blocks [2].
Can you use an eye of ender in the Nether?
No. Thrown in the Nether or the End, it does nothing [1]. Triangulate in the Overworld, then divide the coordinates by 8 for the Nether trip [3].
How many eyes of ender do you need for the End portal?
Twelve fill an empty portal. Frames can come pre-filled (10% each, 1.2 on average) [2], so you’ll often need fewer, but carry spares for throws that shatter.
Why does the eye point somewhere different from an old guide?
Since Java 1.19 the eye leads to the corner of the staircase’s chunk, not its centre [1], and Java 1.19.3 changed the placement code, which shifted stronghold positions [2]. Seed maps made for older versions can be off.
